Branchlings turns your child's ideas into storybooks, painted page by page. They dream up what happens, choose the path at every fork, and add their own twists along the way. The story follows their imagination.
For iPhone and iPad in the US. Free to download, with in-app purchases. Plans from $9.99 a month.
Your child dreams it up, Branchlings writes and paints it, and then they decide what happens next.
Your child picks a world and who comes along, or tells you the story they want in their own words: “we find a unicorn at the beach who lost her shoes.”
At every fork, painted choices let them decide what happens next. Got a better idea? They tap “My idea!”, tell you, and the story follows along.
Every page is painted for their story. Read it together, let them read on their own, or have it read aloud with each word lighting up as it's spoken.
Painted choices are only the start. At every fork, your child can tap “My idea!” and say what happens next instead: a flying pizza, a talking snowman, a secret door in the cupcake.
This is a real Branchlings story for ages 3–4, the same one families read free in the app. Turn the pages, and when you reach a fork, pick the path.
On picnic morning, Sparky sneezes glitter into Coco’s cupcake batter. Now they need a new treat before the picnic begins.
Starring Sparky the tiny dragon and Coco the baker bunny.
Ask together
In the app, your child dreams up the story: the world, who comes along, and their own ideas along the way.
An imaginary friend, the family dog, a best friend, Grandma: your child picks who comes on the adventure. They can design themselves too, with skin tones and hair like theirs, from afros and locs to puffs and braids. Glasses, hearing aids, wheelchairs, hijabs, turbans and kippahs appear in every picture.
Your child the hero, of course
Imaginary friends dragons very welcome
The family pet the dog always comes along
Best friends the more the merrier
Brothers and sisters even babies on the way
Grown-ups Grandma, Dad, a favorite aunt Sparky the tiny dragon, Captain Whiskers the pirate cat and a whole library of friends are ready for an adventure. Keep the characters your child loves, and bring them back for the next one.
Sparky A tiny dragon who sneezes glitter instead of fire.
Captain Whiskers A pirate cat who is secretly scared of water.
Coco A bunny baker whose cupcakes make everyone giggle.
Twinkle A unicorn who paints rainbows wherever she trots.
Bolt A helper robot who is learning how to tell jokes.
Nibbles A hamster astronaut who wants to find out if the moon is made of cheese.
Professor Hoot A wise old owl who knows a fact about everything.
Princess Pip A princess who would rather climb trees than sit on a throne. From storybook watercolor to clay, plush toys and pixel art, they pick how each story looks. The styles on offer suit their age.
Around bedtime, new stories turn calm and cozy: a gentle choice or two early on, a storyteller reads it aloud, and the lights go down as it winds to goodnight.
Each story is written for your child's age and reading level, from first stories a grown-up reads aloud to longer chapter adventures. Two choices for the littlest listeners, more as they grow.
Have it read aloud with each word lighting up as it's spoken, and tap any word to hear it on its own.
The map shows the path they took. The paths they didn't take wait behind a lock, asking “What if…?” And now and then, a mystery door: where it leads is a surprise.
Loved it? Their hero comes back for a brand-new adventure in the same world, and the story remembers everything that happened.
Now and then a story turns up a treasure for the treasure shelf, or a new outfit for the dress-up wardrobe. Try things on, then paint a new look.
Turn an iPad sideways for a picture book spread: the painting on one page, the words on the other.
A dyslexia-friendly font, your device's text size, and calmer motion if you prefer it.
What we promise about your family's stories, pictures and words:
There's no way to message anyone in Branchlings, and nothing your child makes is public.
A PIN for purchases and settings, words to leave out of every story, topics to skip, and how exciting stories get. “My idea!” can be switched off for each child.
Stories and pictures are made with AI. Everything typed and everything written is checked before your child sees it, and you can report any picture.
A grown-up agrees before anything about a child is kept, and can change their mind at any time.
Every plan brings fresh story credits each month. Stories you've made are always yours to read again.

A usual story uses about 3 credits. A short bedtime story uses about 2. Longer stories, "Ready instantly" stories (every path painted before you choose) and the storyteller voice use more, and the app shows how many before you start. Prices in US dollars. Payment is charged to your Apple Account when you confirm. Subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period; manage or cancel them in your Apple Account settings.
An app that turns your child's imagination into storybooks. Your child dreams up the story, picks what happens at every fork, and adds their own ideas along the way, and Branchlings writes and paints it, page by page. No two stories are the same.
Branchlings tells each story just right for the reader's age, from babies to about 12. A grown-up reads to the littlest ones, with two simple choices. Preschoolers read together, with little prompts to talk about. Early readers follow along as each word lights up, and older children get longer chapter adventures with more choices.
Not yet. Branchlings is coming to iPhone and iPad first, and Android is coming soon.
In the United States, for now.
There's no free trial. Branchlings is free to download, with in-app purchases: you can design your child's character and read the sample stories, every path of them, before you choose a plan. Painting your character and new stories come with a plan, and stories you've made are always yours to read again.
Each plan adds story credits every month. A usual story uses about 3. Longer stories, "Ready instantly" stories (every path painted before you choose) and the storyteller voice use more, and the app shows how many before you start. Subscribers can add credit packs, and credits you buy never expire.
Two ways. A new story can start from their own words ("we find a unicorn at the beach who lost her shoes"). And at every fork, they can tap "My idea!" and say what happens next instead of picking a card. A grown-up can help type it, or use the keyboard's own dictation. Branchlings checks each idea for safety, reads it back, and the story follows it. You can switch "My idea!" off for each child in Settings.
Yes. Stories, pictures and the storyteller voice are made with AI from OpenAI, which works for us under contract and doesn't train its AI on what we send. It deletes what we send it within 30 days. Everything typed and everything written is checked for safety before your child sees it, and you can report any picture.
No. You design your child's character in the app, choosing their skin tone, hair, eyes, glasses and more, or describe them in your own words. If you'd like, a grown-up can also paint a character from a photo: it's only used to check it's safe and paint the character, and it's deleted within 7 days.
Yes. Sign in with Apple or with your email, and your family's stories and characters come back on any iPhone or iPad you sign in on.
Yes, on Plus and Pro. A grown-up can record themselves reading the pages, and your voice reads the story to your child, even on nights you're away. Recordings stay with that story, are never sent to our AI provider, and are deleted with the story, when its words change, or when you remove them.
Subscriptions are managed by Apple: on your iPhone or iPad, open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions. In Branchlings, the credits page has a Manage subscription button that takes you there. Deleting your account doesn't cancel a subscription.
In the app, open Settings, then Your family's account, then Delete account. Everything is deleted from our servers straight away. You can also ask us by email, or see our privacy policy for what we keep and why.
